Destination Lake Titicaca

Lake Titicaca, located in the Altiplano high in the Andes on the border of Peru and Bolivia, is the highest navigable lake in the world (about 3,810 m/12,500 ft above sea level). It extends from southeastern Peru to western Bolivia; it is 196 km (122 mi) long with an average width of 56 km (35 mi). Lake Titicaca has an average depth of 107 m (350 ft) and a maximum depth of 281 m (922 ft). More than 25 rivers empty into Titicaca, and the lake has 41 islands, some of which are densely populated, the most famous of which is the Island of the Sun. Lake Titicaca is fed by rainfall and melt water from glaciers from the nearby Andes. It is drained by the Desaguadero River, which flows south through Bolivia to Lake Poopó. There are many towns and villages dotting the shores of the Lake, however the most beautifully set is the town of Copacabana.

Lake Titicaca is amazing sight; its dark cobalt blue color contrasting with the snow capped Andes on the horizon. Daybreak and sunset are particularly stunning to witness. The sun is extraordinarily intense at this altitude, evaporating off huge amout of water (600,000 l/s); this evaporation keeps the shore’s night temperature somewhat higher then on the surrounding Altiplano and allows for better farming thus most of the shores and islands are dotted with farming terraces dating back to pre-Inca times.

It is no wonder that Lake Titicaca has long been considered a sacred place among indigenous Andean peoples. According to Andean legend, Lake Titicaca was the birthplace of civilization. Viracocha, the creator deity, lightened a dark world by having the sun, moon, and stars rise from the lake to occupy their places in the sky. The surrounding region was one of the seats of early Native American civilization; Tiwanaku and it had important role during the Inca period. It contains many architectural remains, some of which predate the Inca period.
