Incallajta, one of the largest pre-Columbian ruins in Bolivia, at 2900m covers roughly 25 hectares and has been declared a national monument back in 1929. It is thought to be constructed around 1460, and its main purpose was guard the easternmost frontier of Bolivia against incursions of the nomadic and semi-nomadic cannibalistic tribes of the swampy lowlands. This complex is not near the main tourist routes and thus is rarely visited, and there is a great chance that we will be the only visitors.
Our journey continues to our overnight stop, the colonial town of Totora. The narrow streets and old houses give this town authentic feel of what the life have been back in the colonial times. We spend a night here.
